Galaxy A, G and J: how Samsung will revise its range in 2015

After a disastrous year for the mobile branch of Samsung, largely due to miss the Galaxy S5, the Korean company wanted to change the way it does, stop ChatON services like smartphones and less flood the market all kinds or at least to bring order into this ocean of devices. This change is underway with operation over 3 ranges, the A, G and J.

The first is the range of Galaxy A, represents the high end of the firm. The Galaxy Alpha was really only the beginning of a future with a capital A. We know already that this year 2015 we will have the Galaxy A3, A5 and A7 respectively less good at best high range Samsung.

The second is the range of Galaxy G, it would be the mid-range. We do not know yet but little about it, because only a leak on a model with as SM-G430 code name with the technical characteristics of a good mid-range makes us think that this will be the spearhead G. Maybe he future Galaxy G6 and G4 and G2 will soon join.

The third and last is that of the Galaxy J, the entry level. Our knowledge of J are more advanced, as we have already had leaks of a Galaxy J1 corresponds exactly to an entry-level smartphone. Samsung may want to make the flagship of the entry with a single model to complete the set.

While Samsung flooded the smartphone market with more than 50 year, it may well be that with the desire for radical change it now falls to 7 smartphones divided into 3 ranges which would cover the entire middle and top range as well as the grafted range with J1 (J1, G2, A3, G4, A5, G6, A7?). Nevertheless we have no certainty, and we can only wait for future announcements from the manufacturer.

Elephone P7000 8 core processor, 3GB of RAM and 16 megapixels for 200 €

Elephone is a Chinese company that has existed since 2006, prior to this year few of you had heard of it and even today it remains relatively unknown in our old continent and that is unfortunate. This time the company unveils a new smartphone with powerful components with a metal design and an affordable price, what more?

This is our greatest misfortune qu'Elephone is poorly known in France as the manufacturer makes very good products at great prices and with a good finish. We already talked about the P5000 and its battery of 5350 mAh for today is the P7000 with its incredible data sheet.

Here is the product of Elephone P7000 Specification
  •      Android 5.0 Lollipop
  •      Screen 5.5 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080)
  •      MT6752 processor 64bit 8 cores
  •      GPU Mali-760MP
  •      3GB RAM
  •      Battery 3200 mAh
  •      16 GB of internal storage
  •      Rear optical sensor: 16 megapixels / forward Sensor: 8 megapixels
  •      Fingerprint Scanner
  •      Compatible 4G LTE
  •      Bluetooth 4.0
  •      Micro SD card slot
  •      Metal Design

So would it have any defects? It all depends on your use indeed the only miss I could blame this smartphone is NFC and Gorilla Glass 3, perhaps the latter is present, but the manufacturer does not speak in detail of his product anyway.
The P7000 is able to compete with most of the flagships of today and includes almost everything you need for a high-end smartphone, Elephone pushes even the defect to incorporate a fingerprint scanner on the APN to the rear of the product ..

What is usually blames the low cost Chinese smartphones is finishing and the use of cheap plastic, it is not the case of Elephone that promises all-aluminum hull and the images show a very good finish to do by having in his hands. Want to know what's the good news in all this? This smartphone is only 200 €!

News Samsung Follows Apple's lead, Reveals Galaxy S4 Gold Edition

Galaxy S4 Gold Edition
Samsung Galaxy S4 was globally launched back in March. However, the device landed in India only in April with a price tag of Rs. 41,500. The device sports a 5-inch full-HD display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, and pixel density of 441ppi. It is powered by 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor alongside 2GB of RAM and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The Galaxy S4 sports a 13-megapixels rear shooter and a 2-megapixel one on the front.

The trend of gold variants of smartphones was reignited when Apple, famous for its understated colours on its mobile products, popularly announced a Gold iPhone 5s, which then proceeded to sell out. HTC followed suit, and announced a new version of the flagship smartphone, the One 'Gold' edition, last week. The HTC One Gold edition is a premium version of the flagship smartphone with a new colour addition of 24-carat gold - making it a much more luxury-geared offering, with a serious price tag. Under the hood we assume that the Galaxy S4 Gold Edition has similar specifications as the original variant.

It seems that the Apple iPhone 5s and the HTC One are not the only smartphones getting the gold treatment. An image revealing Samsung's flagship smartphone, Galaxy S4 in Gold Brown and Gold Pink have been teased by Samsung Gulf on Facebook. Additionally, the Samsung Arabia has teased the Galaxy S4 Gold Edition on Twitter. The tweet reads, "Introducing the latest GalaxyS4 Gold Edition - for a style that's uniquely yours!"

At this point of time, there is no word about the Galaxy S4 Gold Edition's price or availability details but it appears that the device would only hit selective markets that would include Gulf countries.

China's Booming Smartphone Sales to Benefit Taiwanese Suppliers

China's Booming Smartphone
Taiwanese suppliers are experiencing huge growth as a result of surging demand for cheaper smartphones in the Far East with China in particular driving growth in Taiwanese output. State run Central News Agency quotes figures from the Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute [MIC] as stating that the Integrated Circuit [IC] packaging industry will grow by 7.3 per cent in 2013 to hit a total output value of 373.1 billion TWD [£7.87 billion]. The handset manufacturers set to benefit include Hon Hai Precision Industry, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering [ASE], Kinsus Interconnect Technology, TSC, Chipbond Technology and Siliconware Precision Industries [SPIL], according to ZDNet.

In addition to China’s thirst for cheaper smartphones, the MIC added that Apple’s reliance on Taiwanese suppliers will continue and the iPhone 5C will only serve to back up the confidence many hold in the Taiwanese supplier market. Hon Hai, in particular, will benefit from increased orders for the iPhone 5C and tablets that are expected in the fourth quarter. When it comes to IC packaging, ASE could increase its sales by as much as 25 per cent in the third quarter thanks to high demand for its Wi-Fi modules that are required by affordable smartphones made for certain unidentified US companies.

Xiaomi, which despite launching in 2011 is already ahead of Apple in China, has been a particular boon for Taiwanese firm Chipbond Technology, with its chip-on-glass [COG] coveted by them and a school of other cheap smartphone manufacturers. Additionally, SPIL, another Taiwanese firm, is anticipating reporting “record sales” in Q3 of 2013 and in the process surpassing the record set back in Q3 2007. The Chinese smartphone market saw 88.1 million devices sold in Q2 2013, a number that represents some 20 per cent of all the smartphones shipped across the globe.

Apple's iOS 7 Update Now Available For you

Apple's iOS 7 shimmers and glides. The so-called flat design looks cold initially, but soon seems cutting edge. Dive into the settings, and you'll uncover wonderful improvements in security. A new "share sheet" comes off as much more intuitive than the buttons we've come to know so well. Everything's different, but this is a time for closing your eyes, making the leap, and embracing change. The iOS 7 is available to install on compatible Apple devices, namely the iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, and fifth-generation iPod touch. For a model-by-model list, see our complete list of devices that will run iOS 7. The iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S will come with iOS 7 already installed on them. Apple released the final code for iOS 7 on 18 September, and it's free to download to any compatible device. There are a few ways to download it, and you'll want to back up your device before you do! We have a complete set of instructions in our step-by-step guide on how to download iOS 7. If you're ready to roll now, just go to Settings > General > Software Update to install the new OS.

iOS 7 looks stunningly different. The stark differences between iOS 6 and iOS 7 are most apparent when you look at before and after images back-to-back. You'll notice a lack of 3D. Icons sit in a flat layer that seems to hover just above the screen's background – and changing the wallpaper to suit the new design is a must in my book. (Experiment: Set that old water droplet wallpaper behind the new app icons, and watch the horror of the two worlds colliding). The design of iOS 6, and really all versions of iOS prior to version 7, had icons that looked like buttons. As some design experts have pointed out, there's even an imaginary outside source of light that shines down on the app icons. It’s a skeuomorphic design, and buttons look like they are what they represent, rather than just images on a screen. In iOS 7 that external source of light casting shadows and so forth is gone. The new look evokes computers and a true digital experience that has little to do with real-world physicality.

The photo editing tools are still fairly limited. New preset filters similar to those in Instagram and the Twitter mobile app are underwhelming, seeing as users came to rely on separate photo editing apps long ago. The ability to shoot photos in a square aspect ratio, on the other hand, is better than some have let on. Profile pictures for online accounts are generally square, so iOS 7's default makes it easier to take a good headshot in the first place, rather than crop it later. A few tweaks help the panoramic feature in the camera work a little better, but the panoramic capability itself isn't new to version 7.

You should download it and install it (be sure to back up your device first, though), explore it, tinker with its settings, and develop your own opinion about the design. But let it warm on you, first. You might find yourself initially turned off by the look, but in little to no time, this new world will quickly feel like a second home.

A photographer's Perspective with Nokia 808 PureView Review

While there's no question that the Nokia 808 PureView is technologically interesting and represents something of a breakthrough in photographic technology, at the end of the day it's still only a phone camera, just one with a larger than average sensor. Yes, the images can be amazingly detailed at full resolution, and yes the "oversampled" images do look nice at lower ISO settings, but the trade-off between resolution and photocell size really doesn't pay off as well as the hype would suggest, and as a camera it's handicapped by the usual phone camera problem; the lack of an optical zoom lens, a sluggish AF system that doesn't work well in low light, and inaccurate and unreliable exposure metering.

Most mobile phone cameras use extremely small sensors, usually 1/3.2in, or in real terms approximately 4.54 x 3.42mm, with a surface area of 15.5mm2. Most compact cameras use 1/2.3in sensors, which typically measure 6.17 x 4.55mm giving a surface area of 28.5mm2. Advanced compacts such as the Canon G12 use a 1/1.7in sensor measuring 7.44 x 5.58mm, an area of 43.4mm2. The Nokia 808 PureView uses an even larger sensor than that; it's a 1/1.2in chip measuring 10.67 x 8.00mm, with a surface area of 85.33mm2. In other words, its sensor has nearly double the surface area of an advanced compact, and over five times the surface area of a typical phone camera sensor. However it's still only about a quarter the size of an APS-C sensor (typically 370mm2), and less than one-seventeenth the size of the 40-megapixel sensor (44 x 33mm, 1452mm2) in the Pentax 645D, the only camera with a comparable resolution.

What this means of course is that the individual photocells are extremely small, in fact they're 1.4 microns, roughly the same pixel density as a compact camera with a 13-megapixel 1/2.3in sensor. In fact, if you think of the sensor as three 13-megapixel 1/2.3in sensors bolted together it makes a lot more sense. Unfortunately, such overpowered compacts are very prone to excessive image noise. Photocells that small are relatively poor at capturing light, especially when there's not a lot of light around to be captured, so they tend to produce very poor image quality in low light situations. To try and get around this the 808 camera combines the output of several photocells into one pixel, a technology which Nokia calls "Pixel Oversampling", but which regular readers will recognise as "pixel binning", a common high-ISO noise reduction technique used in cheaper compact cameras. From its 41MP sensor, it produces images of 8MP, 5MP or 3MP, depending on the quality setting, combining the output of different numbers of photocells into one pixel in the final image. But then the 808 can also produce full-resolution images of 38 megapixels in 4:3 aspect ratio, or 36MP in 16:9, which is quite a party trick, and we'll be taking a look at these later.

Another technological breakthrough that makes this larger sensor design possible is the 808's high quality Carl Zeiss lens, which was specially developed to match the sensor. Usually a larger sensor requires a greater distance between the lens and the sensor, which is why more advanced cameras are usually quite big. By using a non-zoom, fixed aperture lens designed specifically to match this sensor, the camera unit on the 808 is able to remain relatively small, although it does still make quite a bulge on the back of the phone. The lack of optical zoom is something of a limitation, but the 808 does offer a "lossless" digital zoom, adjusting the pixel oversampling to compensate for the cropping of the image and retaining much the same quality. In terms of image quality, it's a mixed bag too. Some people have been raving about it, but to be honest I wasn't all that impressed. One of the main claims is that it's supposedly noise-free, but this is simply not true. Sure, at the 50 ISO minimum sensitivity setting the image quality is undeniably very good, but noise starts to appear even at 100 ISO, and by the 1600 ISO maximum setting it performs no better than any mid-price compact camera. The level of detail at the full-resolution 38-megapixel setting (or 32 megapixels in 16:9 format) is undeniably impressive, showing up tiny details in the scene amazingly well. In my usual sample shot it could easily pick out wood grain from thirty feet away, at least in good light.

However that's not really the way the camera is intended to be used. It's at its best in the 8-megapixel PureView mode, using the pixel oversampling technology to its best effect. In this mode the colour rendition is very good, with bright vibrant hues in good light, and plenty of fine detail, but it's really still not any better than a good 8-10-megapixel compact camera. Like everything else in the known universe, the 808 can also shoot 1080p video, and it has to be said that the quality isn't bad, although again it bears the 'for a phone' caveat. It suffers from the usual CMOS sensor "Jello effect" if you pan too quickly, but it has that bright LED light for extra illumination, and the sound quality - mono only of course - is surprisingly good.

Droid Mini by Motorola (Verizon Wireless) Phone Review and Specification

The Droid Ultra, Droid Mini, Droid Maxx, and Moto X are all based on the same chipset, Motorola’s X8. That’s basically a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro dual-core Krait 300 processor running at 1.7GHz with an Adreno 320 GPU. On benchmarks, it holds its own with Snapdragon 600-based competitors, so banish all of those complaints about it being an “older part.”

All of these phones have effectively the same performance, which is very good. The phone feels fast and responsive, with smooth scrolling and few delays. Like the Moto X, the Ultra is running Android 4.2.2; Motorola says an Android 4.3 update is coming.

Features and quality

Like the other new Droid phones, the Droid Mini is made of a very slick black Kevlar which looks and feels like plastic. It attracts some serious fingerprints on the back panel. The Droid Mini’s slickness bothers me a lot less than the Motorola Droid Ultra’s, because it’s small enough to securely hold and operate with one hand.

At 4.77 by 2.41 by .35 inches (HWD) and 4.6 ounces, it’s smaller and lighter than the Moto X and Verizon’s other leading smartphones, but its 4.3-inch TFT LCD screen has the same 1280-by-720 resolution as the Moto X’s 4.7-inch AMOLED panel does. That makes for a higher pixel density, at 341 pixels per inch. LCD screens also typically have cooler, less-saturated colors than AMOLED screens do, and the Droid Mini’s screen is both a bit brighter and a bit better color-balanced than our Moto X.

The Droid Mini supports Verizon’s CDMA network, the AT&T HSPA+ network (oddly enough), foreign HSPA+ networks on the 900 and 2100MHz (but not 1800MHz) bands at speeds up to HSPA+ 42, and Verizon’s LTE network on 700MHz only—for now. A firmware update will bring support for Verizon’s AWS LTE spectrum, which will improve LTE speeds where it’s implemented.

The Mini can hit Wi-Fi networks on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, including the new 802.11ac networks. All the usual other radios are here, too: Bluetooth 4.0 (which works very well for voice dialing and media playback), GPS, NFC and such. No, you can’t have Google Wallet; Verizon blocks it.

I got 13 hours, 40 minutes of talk time with the Droid Mini, better than the Droid Ultra but not quite as good as the Moto X. The Mini has a 2000mAh battery, smaller than the other two phones, but its smaller screen size will help balance that out for comparable battery life.
