Sony Xperia ZR Mobile Phone Review, Specs and Price

The Xperia ZR waterproof phone handles it swimmingly thanks to the super sensitive Exmor RS™. Backlit? With HDR for pictures and videos, all your shots come out just beautiful. Xperia ZR also comes with a 13 megapixel fast capture camera that goes from sleep to snap in less than a second. The dedicated camera key can shoot from a locked screen, meaning you’ll never miss a capture-worthy moment ever again.
The screen on the Sony Xperia ZR is 4.55 inches, with a 720 x 1280 resolution for a pixel density of 323 pixels per inch, making it both smaller and lower resolution than the 5 inch Sony Xperia Z, though it’s still quite large and a reasonable resolution. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which is slightly outdated since we’re on 4.2.2 now, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it gets upgraded to that soon after launch. The Xperia ZR has just 8GB of built in storage but it can take micro SD cards of up to 32GB.

The Sony Xperia ZR also has a 13.1 megapixel camera which can shoot 1080p video at 30fps. It also shares a similarly premium metal and glass build to the Sony Xperia Z. Finally there’s also a 2300 mAh battery in the handset, which given the size and power of the device should be plenty enough to keep it going for a decent amount of time. So, other than having a smaller, lower resolution screen how does this handset actually differ from its brother? Well it’s even more waterproof, allowing you to submerge the handset up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes, and you can even use the camera underwater. It also has a dedicated camera button, which the Sony Xperia Z lacked, so in other words it’s a better handset for photo fanatics, though not by much unless you particularly want to do a lot of underwater photography on your smartphone.

On the whole the Sony Xperia ZR definitely seems to be a lesser handset than the Sony Xperia Z, but it has an estimated price of around £350, which should make it substantially cheaper since the Xperia Z is currently selling for over £400. There’s no firm release date yet for the UK, however the Sony Xperia ZR is set to launch in the Netherlands in July so there’s a good chance that we’ll get it around then too.
